The hint is a tile that, when stepped on, replaces the bottom half of the right panel (containing the "CHIPS LEFT" display) with the text "Hint:", followed by the hint text of the level. Otherwise, it functions like a normal floor space.
The hint is set for each level, not for each hint tile. Therefore, a level cannot have two different hints even if it had two different hint tiles. The maximum length of the hint text is 255, since 255 is the maximum number that can be indicated with two bytes.
