Teeth S

The teeth, also known as a frog, is a monster in Chip's Challenge that follows Chip wherever he goes. Like Chip directed by the mouse, teeth use Chip as their base point and move either vertically or horizontally one move at a time, along the longer path, and vertically if tied. If this direction is not a legal move, they will go the other way if that is a legal move, and if not, they will simply stay put until Chip moves somewhere that creates a legal move for the teeth. Also, if the teeth is already on the same row or column as Chip, they will only go in one direction, and if that is illegal, they will stay put. This causes teeth to be slow-witted (they move only every other move) and without a great sense of navigation.

Teeth will not chase Chip while sliding on ice or force floors; their moving principles are restored when they are off. However, if teeth begin on an ice square, their first move is determined by their programming, and then the ice takes effect.

A detailed explanation follows this 5x6 diagram:

Teeth E Force Floor W Gravel Gravel Chip W
Ice Force Floor N Gravel Fire Ice
Ice Panel N
Ice Toggle Door Open Toggle Door Closed
Ice Toggle Door Closed Toggle Door Open
Ice SW

From where Chip stands, the teeth will continue to touch the west force floor. If Chip slides D repeatedly, if the teeth is about to move as Chip slides back up, the teeth will slide down the ice. If Chip stays where he is, the teeth will eventually burn in the fire space. Should Chip stay on one of the gravel spaces, the teeth will eventually run back onto the force floors again. If Chip is on the lowermost gravel at that point, the teeth, moving horizontally, will stay in the corner until Chip moves south.

Should Chip stand on the space with the thin wall and the teeth at the end of the ice, the teeth will move vertically first, and since it cannot move horizontally, it will move up again, and then right. Since it cannot now move right, it will then step up. If an outside force were to switch the toggle walls as the teeth was sliding, the teeth would move north, east, and then stay where it is, since both the vertical and horizontal spots are blocked off. If the walls change again, the teeth is then free to move north.

It is important to know the way teeth move in order to solve Morton in particular; when Chip is approaching Morton's lair, he must leave a chip behind to force Morton to move another way.

In this context, the word "teeth" is always used even when referring to a single monster. Teeth also suffer from the Controller and Boss Glitch.
